What is the difference between a hose and a tube?

In a hose the inner dimension is critical. A hose is mounted on a fitting, i.e. the outer diameter of the fitting must be compatible with the inner diameter of the hose. In a hose the inner diameter is listed first.

In a tube the outer dimension is critical. A tube is mounted into a fitting, i.e. the hole in the fitting must be compatible with the outer diameter of the tube. In a tube the outer diameter is listed first.

Therefore, the list order of the dimensions given by the manufacturer is a good way to separate a hose from a tube. It is very difficult to define the difference between a hose and a tube in any other way, e.g. by technical features. Naturally, even this definition does not apply to all products on the market.

What type of fittings do you recommend for hoses?

Proper fittings must meet the following three requirements:

  1. The dimensions of the fitting and the hose must be equal. The hose can be damaged when connected to a fitting with a inequal dimension.
  2. The fittings and the clamps must not have any sharp edges that can damage the inner hose. A hole in the inner hose will allow water penetrating into the capillary cord way between the layers. In the cord way the water can flow several meters until the outer hose swells. This can happen at many points. Check the fitting and the clamps before connecting a new hose. Remove any sharp edges.
  3. Either a wide clamp or two clamps should be used to hold the cords in place. If a correct compression is not provided, it is possible that the cords can slip when the pressure rises in the hose. Then the hose will swell or leak at the fitting. You can repair the hose by cutting off the damaged part, and reconnect the hose correctly.

Correct fittings and clamps do not cause any of the above mentioned problems.
